Creator of Android, Andy Rubin, has tweeted images of a new smartphone that has a very unusual design. The images show a narrow smartphone with a metallic finish that seems to change colors with different viewing angles.

While the Essential CEO didn’t say when it might be released or mentioned any features, he did write “New UI for radically different formfactor” in his tweet.

As one can see in the pictures, the phone has a bump on the back which appears to be the camera. It has four different metallic finishes and colors that looks pretty cool.

The elongated phone has a very tall UI displaying card-like apps with big buttons. There is a large button and volume rockers on the right edge alongside a fingerprint sensor on the back. The phone also has a single rear camera.

As far as the front camera is concerned, Essential’s next smartphone seems to have adopted the pinhole camera cutout. Previous reports suggested that the next Essential phone might come with an under-display camera. Maybe those plans have been scrapped or postponed for the future.

We don’t know the official name of the phone but Essential is calling it ‘Project GEM’.

Rubin unveiled the first Essential phone two years ago which sold poorly. Last year, the company reportedly canceled a second model and even laid off 30% of its staff.

Given those stats, it will be interesting to see how this device performs in the market. Did you like this new form factor? Do share your views with us!
