After months of development work, Canonical has officially released Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine. This release includes many new features, including the long-overdue ZFS file system.

In its official release, Canonical said that Ubuntu 19.10 focuses on empowering the developers in fast-growing fields like AI, ML, edge computing, etc. Since the first Ubuntu release arrived on the horizon fifteen years ago, it has helped the open source enthusiasts and enterprises in numerous ways. Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, said that the organization wishes to continue delivering strong support to the whole community.

What’s new in Ubuntu 19.10?

Starting with ZFS itself, it’s a scalable and advanced file system that has been rapidly gaining popularity among the technology enthusiasts. It’s known to support better data compression, copy-on-write, snapshots, data integrity verification, automatic repair, etc. With Ubuntu 19.10 Linux operating system, you’ll be given an option to use ZFS file system.

Another big change in Ubuntu 19.10 is the shipping of preloaded NVIDIA drivers with the installation ISO file. It will make things easier for gamers and developers who need to use their system to deal with machine learning models. Moreover, 19.10 also adds support for AMD Navi GPUs as it’s running on the new Linux 5.3 kernel; the latest Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is also supported by Ubuntu 19.10.

Developers also have another good news as Kubeflow is now available as a MicroK8s addon. It’s expected to improve AI/ML capabilities by helping the developers set-up and run their models in minutes. With strict confinement coming to MicroK8s, various addons can now be deployed with extra security with a single command.

Thanks to the decision of Ubuntu’s kernel team to choose LZ4 kernel image compression, Ubuntu 19.10 will also deliver better boot times.

Moving on to the visual changes and desktop environment, Ubuntu 19.10 comes with GNOME 3.34. Canonical claims that 19.10 is its fastest release yet that delivers a smooth experience on older hardware as well. Going with the trends, users have also been given the choice to select a dark or light Yaru theme. There are many other small visual changes spread across the operating systems that you’ll notice gradually as you’ll use this open source operating system.
